The right camera settings depend on light and movement: keep ISO as low as the light allows (100 to 400 in daylight), use a shutter speed fast enough to freeze motion (at least 1/125 s for people, 1/500 s or faster for action), and use a wide aperture (low f-number) to blur backgrounds or a narrower one (f/8 to f/11) for landscapes. Photography SI in CEMP Life analyses your scene and tells you the exact ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure compensation and focus mode to dial into Pro mode.
The exposure triangle in three lines
- ISO: sensor sensitivity. Higher is brighter but grainier
- Shutter speed: how long light is let in. Faster freezes motion, slower blurs it
- Aperture (f-number): opening size. Lower f-number means brighter and blurrier background
- White balance sets colour temperature so whites look white
Starting settings for common shots
| Shot | ISO | Shutter speed | Aperture | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait outdoors | 100 to 200 | 1/250 s | f/1.8 to f/2.8 | Focus on the nearest eye |
| Landscape | 100 | 1/125 s or slower on a tripod | f/8 to f/11 | Expose for the sky |
| Indoor low light | 800 to 3200 | 1/60 s | Widest available | Brace the phone or use night mode |
| Action and sport | 400 to 1600 | 1/1000 s | f/2.8 to f/4 | Use continuous focus |
| Food | 100 to 400 | 1/125 s | f/2.8 to f/4 | Side light from a window |
| Night city | 800 to 1600 | 1/15 s with support | Widest | Lower exposure to keep lights from burning out |
Phones often have a fixed aperture, so ISO, shutter speed, exposure compensation and white balance are the levers you will use most in Pro mode.
How to get the exact settings for your scene
- Take the shot in auto mode, or point the camera at the scene.
- Open Photography SI in the Creator Studio and upload or analyse it.
- SI reads the light, depth, scene type and subject.
- You get recommended ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure compensation and focus mode.
- Switch to Pro or Manual mode, dial them in and reshoot.
Because it explains the settings rather than editing the picture for you, you learn something every time. After a few weeks you will predict the answer before you ask.
Point, analyse, shoot like a pro.

What white balance should I use?
| Light | White balance |
|---|---|
| Daylight, sun | About 5200 to 5600 K |
| Cloudy or shade | About 6000 to 7000 K |
| Indoor warm bulbs | About 2700 to 3200 K |
| Fluorescent or LED | About 4000 to 4500 K |
If skin looks orange, lower the Kelvin; if it looks blue, raise it.
Common camera mistakes
- Shutter too slow for people: motion blur that looks like bad focus
- ISO too high in good light: unnecessary grain
- Metering for the wrong area: bright windows turning faces into silhouettes
- Mixed light sources: daylight plus warm bulbs fighting each other
Why learn settings at all?
Auto mode guesses. In tricky light (backlit portraits, concerts, candlelit dinners, fast pets) it often guesses wrong. Knowing which dial to turn turns a lucky shot into a repeatable one, which matters if you create content for a living.
