A noisy washing machine is usually caused by an unbalanced load (banging during the spin), a coin or object caught in the drum (rattling or clinking), worn drum bearings (a loud grinding or roaring that rises with spin speed), a worn belt (squealing) or a blocked pump (humming while draining). MechSense in CEMP Life helps you narrow it down: place your phone on the running machine for 10 seconds and Super Intelligence (SI) cross-analyses vibration and sound to flag abnormal patterns and possible causes.
Washing machine noises and likely causes
- Banging or thumping on spin: unbalanced load, or the machine is not level
- Rattling or clinking: coins, keys or a bra wire in the drum or pump
- Grinding or roaring that rises with speed: worn drum bearings
- Squealing: worn or loose drive belt
- Humming or buzzing while draining: blocked or failing drain pump
- Knocking from behind: worn shock absorbers or suspension springs
How to diagnose machine noise with your phone
- Start the machine on the cycle where the noise happens (often the spin).
- Open MechSense in the Everyday Toolkit.
- Hold the phone firmly on the top or side of the machine.
- Tap Start. For 10 seconds SI records vibration through the accelerometer and sound through the microphone.
- Read the result: abnormal patterns, possible causes and recommended next steps.
Run it again after a fix (rebalancing the load, levelling the feet) to see whether the pattern has changed.
Let your phone listen to the machine.

Quick fixes to try first
- Redistribute the load: one heavy towel or a duvet can throw the drum off balance
- Level the machine: adjust the feet until it does not rock
- Check the drum and filter: turn the drum by hand and clean the pump filter to remove coins and grit
- Remove transit bolts on a newly installed machine; forgetting them causes violent shaking
- Do not overload: leave a hand's width of space at the top of the drum
When to call an engineer
If the noise is a grinding roar that gets louder with speed, water is leaking, the machine smells of burning, or it trips the electrics, stop using it and call a qualified engineer. Bearing failure tends to get worse quickly and can damage the drum.
It is not just washing machines
MechSense works on any machine you can safely touch while running:
- Boilers and heat pumps: new rattles or hums
- Dishwashers and tumble dryers: pump and drum noises
- Fridges and freezers: compressor buzz
- Motors, fans and pumps: bearing wear and imbalance
- Car engines: combine with Auto SI for the dashboard
The honest limits
MechSense is for awareness and maintenance guidance only. It cannot see inside the machine, and phone sensors are not industrial vibration analysers. Always have machinery inspected by a qualified engineer before making repair or safety decisions, and never place your phone where it could fall into moving parts.
