To measure EMF with your phone, use an app that reads the built-in magnetometer, then move the phone slowly around the area you want to check. EMF Health in CEMP Life measures magnetic field strength in microtesla (µT) and classifies the result against reference levels as Safe (under 100 µT), Caution (100 to 200 µT) or Concerning (above 200 µT), with a suggested distance from the source. A phone measures magnetic fields, not radio waves such as Wi-Fi or 5G.
What to know first
- Your phone's magnetometer measures magnetic fields in microtesla
- Earth's own field is roughly 25 to 65 µT everywhere
- Readings rise sharply near motors, transformers, chargers and speakers, then fall fast with distance
- A phone cannot measure radio-frequency radiation from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or mobile masts
What is EMF?
EMF stands for electromagnetic field. In everyday conversation it covers two very different things:
- Low-frequency magnetic fields from electricity: wiring, appliances, power supplies, transformers and motors. These are what a phone magnetometer can read.
- Radio-frequency (RF) fields from wireless signals: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile networks. Measuring these needs a dedicated RF meter.
Being clear about this is the difference between a useful reading and a misleading one.
How to measure EMF with your phone, step by step
- Open EMF Health in the Health and Wellness pod.
- Hold the phone and tap Start EMF Scan.
- Move it slowly around the area you want to measure: your desk, the bedside table, the cot, beside the fridge or fuse box.
- Read the µT value, the Safe, Caution or Concerning classification, and the suggested safe distance.
Repeat at different distances. The fall-off is usually dramatic: a reading that is high against a power brick can drop to background a short distance away.

What is a safe EMF level?
International guidelines set reference levels for public exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields, and EMF Health classifies readings against them: under 100 µT Safe, 100 to 200 µT Caution, above 200 µT Concerning. Most homes sit far below these levels except right next to certain devices. Scientific bodies have not established that typical household exposure causes harm; the sensible approach is simply to know your readings and keep sources at a comfortable distance from where you sleep and sit for hours.
Where are EMF readings highest at home?
- Next to plug-in power adapters and chargers
- Beside microwave ovens and induction hobs while running
- Near the fuse box, electricity meter or wiring runs
- Close to speakers and anything with a strong magnet or motor
A useful habit: keep chargers and power strips away from the head of the bed.
Why does my reading jump around?
Magnetometers also respond to metal objects and magnets, and to how you hold the phone. Move slowly, keep the phone at the same angle, and stay away from magnetic phone cases or car mounts while measuring. The same sensor powers CEMP Life's stud finder, which is why metal in a wall changes the reading.
The honest limits
EMF Health is an awareness tool. A phone magnetometer is not a calibrated laboratory meter, it does not read RF radiation, and the classification is a general guide rather than a health assessment. For the other environment tools, measuring noise levels and air pressure for weather headaches, see the best health and wellness app.
